DE vs. Cartridge: What’s the Difference?

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters

• Use fabric grids coated in DE powder to trap very fine particles.
• Typically offer excellent clarity due to fine filtration.
• Can be backwashed to expel dirty DE and debris between full cleanings.

Cartridge Filters

• Use pleated cartridges (no DE powder) to capture debris.
• Require opening the tank and rinsing/soaking the cartridges to clean.
• No backwash line; cleaning is done by removing and washing the cartridges.

Which is “better”? Both work great when maintained. DE shines for ultra-fine clarity; cartridges are simpler (no DE handling) and have fewer valves. The real key is timely, thorough cleaning.

About DE Backwashing (and Why We Still Open & Clean)

Backwashing a DE filter sends dirty DE and trapped debris out through the waste line, then you add fresh DE to re-coat the grids. It’s a useful mid-cycle step—especially after storms or parties—but it does not remove oils, fine dust films, and scale that lodge deep in the fabric.

For best results, we still open the DE filter, remove the grids, and clean them completely on a set schedule. This restores flow, improves clarity, and protects pump and heater performance.

Our Recurring Filter Maintenance: Every Four Months

For our climate and usage patterns, we recommend a full filter service every 4 months (three times per year). This cadence keeps flow strong and water clear through monsoon dust, heat waves, and heavy swim loads.

Suggested Service Cadence (Every 4 Months)

Cycle 1	January–February: Post-holiday reset; remove winter oils and fine dust.
Cycle 2	May–June: Pre-summer deep clean; prep for heat, sunscreen, and parties.
Cycle 3	September–October: Post-monsoon clean; clear dust loads and organics.

What We Do Each Service

• Shut down safely, open the tank, and fully remove grids or cartridges.
• Rinse and/or soak to remove oils, scale, and fine dust films.
• Inspect bands, end caps, manifolds, and O-rings; recommend replacement if worn.
• Reassemble with fresh DE (for DE filters), lube o-rings, restore system, and check PSI & flow.

Signs you may need service sooner: PSI rising 8–10 above clean pressure, cloudy water, weak returns, heater cycling off, or after big storms/parties.
